Motivation for the AT&T VPN Gateway

Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) create secure, remote network access that allows organizations to offer more flexible work environments for their employees. The increased availability and capability of consumer-grade broadband provides low-cost connectivity, while VPNs preserve the performance and security previously exclusive to expensive, dedicated enterprise circuits. VPN solutions enable organizations to leverage commercial network access while also addressing the wide scope of potential limitations inherent to publicly shared Internet services.

The AT&T Global Network turned to direct customer feedback to meet the needs of AT&T customers, noting that flexibility was key in any VPN deployment. Solutions need to be viable for users running multiple operating systems with a combination of narrowband, cellular and broadband access. While the AT&T Global Network provides a fully managed network service, IT departments often remain the first call for any system or access problem a user may experience.

The VPN Gateway is designed to address these concerns. It removes the requirement of software installation on the end-user computer without sacrificing performance or data integrity, ensuring reliability, simplicity, and ease-of-use as users turn to flexible VPN environments.
